Case Study
Kay, the finance manager at a large company faces a dilemma. Robert, who is one of the Accounts Directors and a union member, has requested an 8 percent raise for his work unit. His request is based on recent finance reports showing that his department has substantially contributed to a 15 percent profit increase for the organisation. He feels that his team should be compensated for the hard work and long hours they have put in over the last few years to achieve this outcome.
Kay knows the value of Robert’s team and readily acknowledges their achievements. However, she knows that the company has plans to expand and diversify. This new project will use up the majority of the profit increase for at least the next five years. She is willing to sit down with Robert and talk about how his team can get involved in the new project. There could be new job opportunities, some overseas assignments, and possible promotions to various leadership positions within the new project. Kay has flagged this with Robert; however, he is adamant that his team needs to be compensated with a monetary increase. He went as far as threatening to get the union involved if his request is unsuccessful.
Styles in negotiation and conflict
1. Avoiding/withdrawing (Lose-lose)
- Both party didn’t get anything out of the negotiation.
2. Accommodating (Lose-win)
- One side give in to the other party request.
3. Collaborating (Win-win)
- Both party managed to come to agreement.
4. Competing (Win-lose)
- Stand firmly with what you request from the other party.
- Not a friendly approach.
5. Compromising (Win-win, win-lose or lose-win)
- Coming out with a settlement together so both party will be satisfied.
Identify one of the conflict-handling styles (accommodating/avoiding/competing) used in this scenario. How did you determine that?
Competing conflict-handling styles is being used by Robert.
Kay has flagged this with Robert; however, he is adamant that his team needs to be compensated with a monetary increase. He went as far as threatening to get the union involved if his request is unsuccessful.
From this, can see that Robert is standing firmly with his word. This made things hard for Kay. This cause a lot of unwanted problems. Kay might have to compromise by either talking to her boss to use some of the funds for his pay increment or have to be assertive to Robert and find a way so both side will achieved a win – win situation.
Choose one of the characters and determine what bargaining approach (distributive or integrative) is used. How did you determine that?
Kay went for the integrative bargaining approach. She is willing to sit down with Robert and talk about how his team can get involved in the new project. Instead of getting the raise that Robert wanted, Kay went new job opportunities, overseas project and possible promotions to various leadership positions. This shows that she trying to compromise and negotiate a win – win situation for both party.
What aspect of interpersonal communication is contributing to the poor working environment? How is this demonstrated in the case?
There is a lack of common goals within the working environment. I believed if everyone in the company have the same goal in mind, they would want the the company to succeed before gaining more self-benefits. Kay wants the company to develop more instead of slowing down the progress by increasing Robert’s pay. While on Robert’s part he just felt that he need to be rewarded immediately for his hard work. This shows that both of them are not in the same page as Robert just want to do his work and get rewarded without thinking of the company progress. Furthermore, he even threaten to get the union involved if his request is unsuccessful. This demonstrated the poor working environment.
Using Hall’s context model (high and low context culture), describe one of the characters’ behaviour. How did you determine that?
Using Hall’s context model, Robert is consider to fall under low context culture. His words convey explicitly most of the meaning in the communication. He is determined to get his raise and even that Kay’s proposal into considerations. This shows that Robert’s relationship with Kay is not as important as getting his raise.
Conclusion
I feel that every misunderstanding should end of in a state where both party will be satisfied. Even though it not easy, but it will benefit everyone. This can avoid all unwanted conflicts and misunderstandings.
